The word entertainment has come to mean an agreeable occupation for the mind; a diversion; amusement: Solving the daily crossword is an entertainment for many. It may also refer to a hospitable provision for the wants and needs of guests, especially in the form of a formal ball or elaborate entertainment. Entertainment is often associated with amusement, although it may have a serious purpose, as in the case of a religious festival or satire. It has evolved to be able to be adapted to any size or type of occasion, from an individual choosing private entertainment from a range of pre-recorded products to performances intended for thousands.

According to Bates and Ferri (2010), entertainment is understood objectively, involves communication between text and audience, consists of external stimulus, provides pleasure and requires an audience.
