A service business can be differentiated from a product business by developing an offering that meets a customer’s needs and desires, building a reputation for that offering, and establishing a competitive advantage over its competitors. The challenges of managing a service business are much the same as those faced by product-oriented businesses.

Management of a service requires a different mindset from that of a product business, and this shift in thinking can lead to a number of barriers to entry for new entrants. The first of these is that most people have a very product-oriented image about the way businesses work. This leads to a language that constricts the ability to communicate effectively about a service business.

Another important barrier is that a service-oriented business is often not able to establish economies of scale the same way that a product company can. This is because a service business, unlike a product company, can not easily produce a single item and sell it to a wide audience.

Therefore, a company has to focus on providing value for the money that it charges its customers. This means that prices for services must be determined by what the customer is willing to pay for the service rather than by what the service itself costs.

This is a significant challenge because it makes it difficult to compare the price of one service to another without knowing what it actually costs. This is a problem that can lead to overcharging and under-pricing, as well as inefficient pricing practices.

The solution to this challenge is often to outsource the delivery of a service to a separate company or organization that specialises in that service, thereby allowing for efficiencies of scale. This can lead to cost reduction, improved service and better control and insight for the entire business.
