A broad term that refers to all activities that contribute to the enjoyment and amusement of people. The word combines the medieval Latin inter-tenere (“to hold inside”) with the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch or spread out. Hence, what appears to be entertainment for one person or group may be work or even torture for another. The same holds true for forms of art, music, or architecture. What may be a familiar entertainment for many has shown an endless potential for creative remix and transformation, ensuring that these familiar images and structures have the ability to survive time.
