Articles on Entertaiment

The word entertainment is derived from the Latin verb intertenere, meaning “to hold inside.” It carries with it the notion of something that occupies the mind in an agreeable way. It suggests diverting or amusing occupation, such as a crossword puzzle or a night out on the town. It also carries with it the idea of hospitable provision for the needs and wants of guests.

In a broad sense, entertainment can include any activity that is understood objectively as being consumer activity, encompasses communication between text and audience from external stimuli, offers pleasure, requires an audience to exist, and occurs in a passive form. (Oliver and Barstsch, 2010; Bates and Ferri, 2011). Ultimately, what is considered entertaining for one individual or group may not be for another.
